The Ki Pro by AJA is a portable hard disc recorder which records direct to ProRes standard or high quality. This enables one to bypass the compression of the affordable cameras and achieve superior results to those which can be achieved with highly compressed codecs.

Canon Introduce MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec

Canon reveals details of their new MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec and also a new plug-in designed to enable users to work with the Log and Transfer facility in Final Cut Pro to import media from DSLR cameras. Testing out the NX5 on the streets of Barcelona - the hybrid AVCHD camera which records to affordable media. Nothing like a real world shoot to see images and get a feel for what this camera is capable of. Sony's first professional AVCHD camcorder, will record 1920 x 1080 images at 24Mbps (50i or 25p), as well as supporting 720/50p and Standard Definition recording. Operational flexibility is further enhanced by support for dual media.

Initially manufacturing boom support equipment for sound recordists the company has since evolved to offer camera cranes and underwater fibre optic filming equipment. Sony PMW-EX1R Investigation

Here we road test the PMW-EX1R. This is the successor to the PMW-EX1, Sony's first professional memory-based camcorder, launched in 2007. The PMW-EX1R adds a number of new features that Sony says were requested by users, including DVCAM recording, an HDMI output, a higher-resolution viewfinder, and one-push Auto Iris, cache recording and easy access to S & Q motion. The EX1R supports multiple frame rate recording such as 59.94i, 50i, and native 23.98P and 25P as well as being 1080i/720P switchable.

Alessandro Beltrame is an Italian based filmmaker who has been working with the Panasonic P2, DVCPro HD format, for over three years. He explains key benefits of the Panasonic technology: working tapeless, using the overcranking and undercranking facility, and the smooth workflow which a frame-based codec brings to the editing environment. Filmed off the coast of Marseille, the filmmaker is shown in action, making use of mattebox and filters, and explaining various techniques by which he has developed his craft.

For the major broadcast show SATIS, in Paris, France - Sony announced several new products. The PMW-EX1R is the replacement for the hugely successful PMW-EX1; the PMW-350 is a shoulder-mounted XDCAM EX camcorder featuring interchangeable lenses; new affordable SxS-1 cards; an adapter to enable one to record XDCAM EX content to affordable memory cards; and two new broadcast monitors.

The Frontline Club

Throughout the 1990's and early 2000's, Frontline Television News broke ground by providing cameraman/journalists specialising in filming in conflict areas. Using lightweight, portable cameras, this new breed of journalist told stories inaccessible to larger crews. The price was high as many from Frontline Television News were were killed on assignment. The Frontline Club has been set up to remember fallen colleagues and to support independent journalism in the 21st century. Vaughan Smith is one of the original Frontline team.

The camera used to shoot Slumdog Millionaire

80% of the film Slumdog Millionaire was filmed with a camera the size of two packets of cigarettes. Size can be deceiving - this modular camera system enables one to record direct to laptop for high quality recording with a tethered camera-head - or to bolt the head onto a processor/recorder for more conventional production.
