So I was booked to film Prince Charles, arrival, walk around, public speaking...
“Now there’s such a thing as Royal Protocol” the person paying the money looks me straight in the eye. “That means you don't film the Prince up close at all. Only from a distance - other-than-that he’s off limits. I’m prepared to have you break that protocol.”
I’m game for this. Tell me I’m not allowed to do something and I just want to be there quicker than switching a camera into record.
Security is not that tight, surprising as this after 9/11. I’m given a badge and now I'm inside at the event. The Prince is walking to the entrance of the building. Got him in my sights. I’m rolling. Follow him. Don’t stop shooting.
Inside the building. I’m mobile. Into the function room, at the back, hidden, among the people.
The Prince enters the room. I shoot from the hip.
He’s close - I go for the money shot.
Hands help above my head I shoot from up high - a man holds up his arm - I’m asked to stop filming, which I do. I have seconds of footage but not enough. Beaten.
Upstairs into the room where the Prince is due to speak.
I position myself knowing that is the only way into the room.
I will shoot the Prince.
