Interview with Mike Schell - Convergent Design Inc.
One of the main problems with the range of affordable cameras is the compression used for the HD footage. HDV, XDCAM EX, AVCHD. All these formats compress the data significantly. Furthermore, the bit rate at which the data is recorded is relatively low.
Convergent Design Inc. have produced two products to get around the compression issue. Flash XDR records at 100 or 160mbps, and also allows for XLR analogue audio to be recorded simultaneously. nanoFlash provides a smaller box which takes SDI or HDMI and also records at 100 or 160mbps. The result is better, sharper 4:2:2 images, which is of much higher quality to the compressed images at 25 or 35mbps.
Allegedly this enables one to turn an affordable camera into a high end camera.
