The Ki Pro by AJA is a portable hard disc recorder which records direct to ProRes standard or high quality. This enables one to bypass the compression of the affordable cameras and achieve superior results to those which can be achieved with highly compressed codecs.

Canon Introduce MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec

Canon reveals details of their new MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec and also a new plug-in designed to enable users to work with the Log and Transfer facility in Final Cut Pro to import media from DSLR cameras. Testing out the NX5 on the streets of Barcelona - the hybrid AVCHD camera which records to affordable media. Nothing like a real world shoot to see images and get a feel for what this camera is capable of. Sony's first professional AVCHD camcorder, will record 1920 x 1080 images at 24Mbps (50i or 25p), as well as supporting 720/50p and Standard Definition recording. Operational flexibility is further enhanced by support for dual media.

Boom Audio & Video is a French company which was founded in 1996. Initially manufacturing boom support equipment for sound recordists the company has since evolved to offer camera cranes and underwater fibre optic filming equipment. Sony PMW-EX1R Investigation

Here we road test the PMW-EX1R. This is the successor to the PMW-EX1, Sony's first professional memory-based camcorder, launched in 2007. The PMW-EX1R adds a number of new features that Sony says were requested by users, including DVCAM recording, an HDMI output, a higher-resolution viewfinder, and one-push Auto Iris, cache recording and easy access to S & Q motion. The EX1R supports multiple frame rate recording such as 59.94i, 50i, and native 23.98P and 25P as well as being 1080i/720P switchable.

When Walter Murch was investigating using Final Cut Pro to edit Cold Mountain, he and his assistant, Sean Cullen, visited a Los Angeles post facility known as DigitalFilm Tree to see what was possible. This resulted in a $999 piece of software being used to edit an eighty million dollar feature film. This high profile project well and truly put DigitalFilm Tree on the map as a facility able to handle major feature film work outside the established AVID way of working. Alessandro Beltrame is an Italian based filmmaker who has been working with the Panasonic P2, DVCPro HD format, for over three years. He explains key benefits of the Panasonic technology: working tapeless, using the overcranking and undercranking facility, and the smooth workflow which a frame-based codec brings to the editing environment. Filmed off the coast of Marseille, the filmmaker is shown in action, making use of mattebox and filters, and explaining various techniques by which he has developed his craft.
Box'a'tricks - investigating the Matrox MXO2 and MXO2 Mini with H.264 Max technology

The MXO2 comes in several configurations: MXO2, MXO2 Rackmount, MXO2 LE and MXO2 Mini. All the MXO2 boxes essentially do the same thing, with the distinguishing factor being the inputs and outputs available. Each box provides for monitor calibration, up-convert, down-convert, cross-convert of video content, and optional accelerated encoding for H.264 using the Matrox Max technology.

In this demo recorded at the FCPUG NAB SuperMeet, Jason's charismatic style comes though as he shows off how simple it is to bring a Final Cut Pro project into Adobe Premiere Pro, to then work with this content in After Effects and to author Blu-ray discs using Adobe Encore. Jason clearly shows that CS4 and Final Cut Pro can be used to compliment one another.

In 2009 Steenbeck is "alive and kicking" still manufacturing editing tables, now used by film archivists, film laboratories, and a dedicated band of film editors who refuse to move from the traditional way of cutting film into a more modern workflow. Steenbeck has stood the test of time and continues to produce and refurbish its machines which have become iconic in the world of film editing.

In January of this year JVC announced the introduction of 2 new cameras: the GY-HM100 and GY-HM700. These professional cameras have been on the market for some time now - and have made serious in-roads into affordable HD acquisition.
