Hi all,

Hope enough people now have FCP5 that someone may be able to shed some light on this one - it's driving me crazy and I'm looking to fix it fast!

I've just clean-installed Tiger and Final Cut Studio on a Dual G5 2GHz Powermac (3.5GB RAM) with two 18" LaCie photon18vision displays running off an Nvidea Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL Card.

I used to run Final Cut Pro HD on this machine all the time with the windows layed out so that I could have a long timeline stretched across both monitors towards the bottom of the screen.

I booted up Final Cut Pro 5 and went to arrange the timeline window in the same way and it refuses to stretch over to the second display, only appearing on to the second display for a moment and then snapping back to the left hand (first) monitor.

I've tried it with empty and full timelines with no success. I've detected my displays using display preferences and I've checked all the options available (as far as I can see) within FCP5 including the various Dual Screen options under window layouts - strangely I can put windows on the other screen as long as they don't stretch over two displays but it's no match for having a two screen timeline to spread things out like in FCPHD. Help urgently required...

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, that would seem the logical solution, wouldn't it? Except that this does nothing to remedy the problem. I'm not using the Digital Cinema Desktop preview - I'm using the Apple Firewire PAL setting under this menu. Even if I select 'None' under Video Playback, the problem persists.

I can put any window on either monitor as long as it is contained within the boundaries of that one screen - but if I want a window to span two screens, it always snaps back to its original screen. Is there maybe a setting in Tiger (or Final Cut Pro) which has disabled the spanning of screens across two monitors?

Two months on and still no solution... Has Apple removed this functionality? Surely there must be more users who stretch their timelines across two screens. Yes, there's no real need anymore for users who can afford two widescreen displays but I still need to use my two 4:3 18" Lacie Photon18Vision LCDs for another couple of years. Has anyone figured it out yet? Final Cut Pro programmers - are you listening? Please restore this feature so long timelines can span two monitors!

GWF,

I missed the original message - just tried this now on a dual G5 with two Acer monitors, and I don't have a problem - the timeline stretches across both screens, and any window I move will happily sit across both monitors if I wished it to.

I've had a look but can't see any options for turning this behaviour on or off - this doesn't help you of course, but it does tell you it's not a fault with FCP 5 itself.

Cheers ... Antony

Whoa! I tried it again today since installing the FCP5 update and it works now! Apple must have fixed the original bug - thanks! Now I can use both my displays for the timeline. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Hi,
im new to final cut pro and had the same problem. To stretch timeline across both monitors in tiger, open a sequence to open the timeline. Right click or control click on the top tab on the timeline to shut it. Then open the sequence again by double clicking in the browser window. Then drag the timeline across both your monitors, making sure the tool bar and audio tool arent in the way else it wont work, and then stretch the timeline by clicking and draging on the bottom right corner of the timeline. It should stretch across both monitors. then drag your timeline back over to the left and save it straight away in window, arrange, custom layout, save. Yx
